Vitellogenin and Vitellin in Insects

چکیده
Vitellogenin is the generic name for a unique group of proteins that are synthesized extraovarially and become the major egg yolk protein, vitellin. Similar proteins are found in all animals with yolky eggs. Because of their high concentration in the egg, and the relative ease with which they can be purified, these proteins are excellent material for the study of the regulation of their synthesis from the molecular, developmental, and physiological points of view. This review covers the synthesis, uptake, and physical and chemical properties of vitellogenins and vitellins in insects. The term vitellogenin was derived from vitellogenesis (102), the period of rapid oocyte growth during which yolk is deposited. Once inside the oocyte these proteins are known as vitellins, because in some cases the molecules are changed during uptake. The definition of vitellogenins has traditionally included the following criteria: (a) They usually comprise 60-90% of the soluble egg yolk proteins (13, 69); (b) they are not made the oocyte, the fat body being the site of synthesis (22, 69, 102); (c) are present in large amounts only in females and thus have been called female-specific proteins (11, 102), although rigorous techniques have revealed small amounts in males (83, 119) and so this definition is not exclusive; and (d) they are selectively taken up by the oocyte during vitellogenesis (120). Because of the dynamics of the uptake mechanism (112,

متن کاملOosorption in the Endoparasitoid, Pteromalus puparum
Oosorption is the resorption of oocytes in the ovaries, and is usually induced by environmental stress. It has been demonstrated in some insect species, but overall the mechanisms of oosorption are poorly understood. In this study, the oosorption in the endoparasitic wasp, Pteromalus puparum L. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), was observed in response to starvation. To explore the details of oosorp...
متن کاملVitellogenin Receptor Mutation Leads to the Oogenesis Mutant Phenotype “scanty vitellin” of the Silkworm, Bombyx mori*
BACKGROUND The vitellogenin receptor (VgR) mediates the uptake of vitellogenin (Vg) from the hemolymph by developing oocytes. RESULTS VgR with the mutational EGF1 domain can bind ligand proteins but cannot be dissociated under acidic conditions. The mutant is lethal in embryos. CONCLUSION Bombyx mori VgR (BmVgR) has an important role in egg formation and embryonic development. SIGNIFICANC...
متن کاملMolecular Characterization of Vitellogenin and Its Receptor Genes from Citrus Red Mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor)
The production and uptake of yolk protein play an important role in the reproduction of all oviparous organisms. Vitellogenin (Vg) is the precursor of vitellin (Vn), which is the major egg storage protein, and vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is a necessary protein for the uptake of Vg into developing oocytes. In this paper, we characterize the full-length Vg and VgR, PcVg1 and PcVgR, respectively, ...
متن کاملIsolation and sequence of a partial vitellogenin cDNA from the cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera, Blattellidae), and characterization of the vitellogenin gene expression.
A partial cDNA clone of the vitellogenin gene from the cockroach Blattella germanica has been isolated from a cDNA expression library using an anti-vitellin-vitellogenin antiserum probe. The analysis of cDNA inserts gave a sequence of 2,645 nucleotides corresponding to the 3' region. The deduced amino acid sequence is 825 residues long and is similar to the homologous portion of the vitellogeni...
